Elgar Howarth
Conductor
-
it has an enchanting score, beautifully conducted and played by Elgar Howarth and the Garsington orchestra
Hugh Canning, Sunday Times
-
Elgar Howarth studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music, where his first study was composition. His conducting career began in the early 1970’s and since then he has appeared regularly with all the leading British orchestras both in the concert hall and in the recording studio. Abroad he has appeared at major festivals and conducted many well-known orchestras including the Munich Philharmonic, Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphony, Zurich Tonhalle, Berlin Radio Symphony, Stockholm Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony, Residentie Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Royal Flanders Philharmonic.
His operatic achievements cover a wide repertoire and include the world premieres of numerous works, including Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre at the Royal Opera in Stockholm and Birtwistle’s Gawain at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. He has also conducted numerous productions at English National Opera, Opera North, Glyndebourne Festival and Garsington in UK as well as in Paris, Gothenburg, Oslo, Prague, Brussels, Cologne and Sydney.
He retains an interest in composing especially, as a former trumpet player, for brass instruments. His works are published by Chester Music and Novello, and are much recorded, particularly on the Decca label.

Ken Smith, Financial Timesintoxicating, intricate, and often challenging orchestral textures and kaleidoscopic gradations of timbre, handled superbly here with Elgar Howarth conducting
Melissa Lesnie, Macarthur ChronicleDean's] swirling dissonances find space for keen musical parody, and hard edges are softened by lyrical expansiveness – at least, they were at Melbourne's State Theatre thanks to the vastly experienced conductor Elgar Howarth.

Arabella
Garsington OperaElgar Howarth leads the orchestra with authentic Straussian conviction, wringing every sumptuous sweetmeat from this somewhat piecemeal score, making this one of the best country-house shows in my relatively recent memory.

May Night
Garsington OperaElgar Howarth conducted this with great delicacy, reminding us of how the young Stravinsky revered Rimsky's skill in instrumentation.
Rupert Christiansen, Daily TelegraphAnd it's the orchestra and chorus that give most pleasure in this performance, thanks to Elgar Howarth's expressive and clearsighted conducting.
