  • In 1982 Sergei Aleksashkin graduated from the Saratov Conservatory and later studied in Italy for two years at the Teatro della Scala. In 1989 he joined the Kirov Opera, with which he regularly tours.

    He performed at the Metropolitan Opera, New York in 1992 and in 1993 made his Japanese debut in Boris Godunov, broadcast by NHK, followed by performances at the Vienna Konzerthaus of Shostakovich’s Symphony No.14, recorded by Denon, Rachmaninov’s Miserly Knight in Dresden and a European tour of The Damnation of Faust with Gergiev. In 1994 Sergei Aleksashkin sang in Boris Godunov in the Salzburg Festival with Abbado, returned to Japan for Shostakovich’s Symphony No.13 and in 1995 took this work on a long-term international tour of major festivals, conducted by Solti and recorded by Decca. In 1997 he sang the role of Don Basilio (The Barber of Seville) for the Royal Opera House, London.

    Other engagements in the West included Boris Godunov (Frankfurt); Prince Igor (Vienna); Tchaikovsky’s Enchantress (Concertgebouw); La Damnation de Faust (Academy of Santa Cecilia, Rome); Pimen in Boris Godunov (Washington, Lyon); Dosifei in Khovanshchina, Kutuzov in War and Peace, Kotchubei in Mazeppa under Gergiev (Kirov at the ROH); The General in The Gambler (Metropolitan Opera), Kutuzov at the Teatro Real, Madrid and King René in Iolanta (Netherlands Opera, Châtelet).

    Most recently he has sung Prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, the General in The Gambler also at the Met and in Vienna, The Enchanted Wanderer (by Rodion Schedrin) under Gergiev in Rotterdam and St. Petersburg, Dvorak’s Requiem under Rozhdestvensky in Lisbon, Boris Godunov (Pimen) at the Teatro Regio di Torino and Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta (René) at the Semperoper Dresden under Vladimir Jurowski.
