Nicholas Cleobury’s Falstaff for Mid Wales Opera “an absolute delight”

19 September 2010

Nicholas Cleobury made a spectacular debut as Artistic Director of Mid Wales Opera, conducting Verdi’s Falstaff in a new production by Martin Lloyd-Evans.  According to Neil Fisher of The Times, Cleobury is “...off to a great start: he conducts a treacherous score with distinction. The whole thing’s a delight”, and Rupert Christiansen of The Telegraph enjoyed “...a sprightly account of the sublimely mercurial score - this is altogether a treat….All praise then to Mid Wales Opera… an absolute delight”.

The Birmingham Post referred to the orchestra as being “sparkling and zestful under Nicholas Cleobury’s well-paced conducting”

The production also features two other Rayfield Artists: Gaynor Keeble, whom The Birmingham Post describes as being “..sensationally witty, perky and smart in her beautifully-vocalised Mistress Quickly” and Martene Grimson of whom The Telegraph wrote “On a purely vocal level, I must single out Martene Grimson’s exquisitely pure singing of Nannetta’s music.”

Performances continue until 13 Nov – please click here for details.
