Anne Marie Gibbons “outstanding” as Handel’s David

Anne Marie Gibbons is enjoying another Handelian success with her assumption of the role of David in Handel’s Saul at the Buxton Festival, in a new production by Olivia Fuchs, conducted by Harry Christophers.  More information can be found here

Hilary Finch in The Times says David is “an irresistibly androgynous hero in Anne Marie Gibbons’s mezzo, strong and sure of focus.”;  Christopher Gray in The Oxford Times says that it is “an impeccable cast, among whom Anne Marie Gibbons’s David is outstanding”; Tim Ashley of The Guardian puts it succinctly: “Gibbons is good”!;  Rupert Christiansen in The Telegraph enjoyed “an accomplished line-up of solo singers, among whom Anne-Marie Gibbons (David) and Robert Murray (Jonathan) shone brightest”;  Claire Seymour of Opera Today agreed, saying “Most impressive of the cast was Anne Marie Gibbons, a stunning David, who used her burnished lower register to convey significant emotional depth as the young man experiences fresh hopes, passions and fears.”
