Tremendous US debut for Hubert Francis
‘Wozzeck’s three bêtes noires were given striking characterizations by outstanding singers. Hubert Francis brought vocal heft to the Heldentenor role of the Drum Major’ (Classical Source) and ‘oozed arrogant carnality from every pore’ (Concertonet). The New York times added that ‘among other standouts in the excellent cast were the bright tenor Hubert Francis as the preening, self assured Drum Major.’
Eddie Wade, who also took part in the tour as one of the apprentices, was described by Classical Source as ‘excellent’.
