Countertenor Ainslie “excels” as Eliogabalo in New York

19 March 2013

Countertenor Christopher Ainslie’s recent performance in the title role of Gotham Chamber Opera’s production of Cavalli’s Eligabalo has been greeted with top class reviews.  Currently showing at The Box –  an alternative nightclub in New York’s Lower East Side – Ainslie’s portrayal of the cross-dressing emperor is a stand-out amongst “a terrific cast, headed by the impressive, sexy countertenor Christopher Ainslie.  Now on his way to becoming a rock star of Baroque opera, Mr. Ainslie excels as the cross-dressing emperor and carries himself like Jonathan Rhys Meyers’s pop idol character in Velvet Goldmine” (Anthony Tommasini, The New York Times).  In James Marvel’s modern-day production which employs the burlesque to highlight the vulgarity of the ill-fated emperor, Ainslie “sang stylishly and committed completely and hilariously to the vileness of the title character” (Heidi Waleson, The Wall Street Journal) and “nailed Eliogabalo’s lean and sociopathic look” (James Jorden, The New York Post).

Performances of Gotham Chamber Opera’s Eliogabalo run until 29th March and tickets can be purchased here.
