Nmon Ford makes his Dutch National Opera debut as Crown in Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess

15 January 2019

Following the outstanding reception earlier this season of James Robinson's new production for the Metropolitan Opera of New York of Porgy & Bess at English National Opera, the production opens this week at Dutch National Opera marking the return of Nmon Ford to his sizzling performance of the villainous Crown.

After sell-out performances in London the production was met with exceptional reviews from critics as Nmon Ford delighted and thrilled audiences with his evil portrayal of the character.

“…Nmon Ford’s Crown: as charismatic a psychopath as you’d hope never to meet…”
Richard Morrison, The Times, 12 October 2018

“…Nmon Ford as a horribly charismatic Crown…”
Boyd Tonkin, The Arts Desk, 12 October 2018

“Nmon Ford (Crown)…easily matched famous past performers of the role…Ford was a virile and exciting villain, rock-steady in a tone and oozing malice and sexual self-confidence.”
Opera Magazine, Ditlev Rindom, November 2018

“…Nmon Ford's nasty Crown packs a big sexual swagger and threat…”
Robert Thicknesse, Opera Now, November 2018

Janai Brugger returns to the role of Clara. She reprises the role at The Metropolitan Opera’s US premiere of the production next season.

Also appearing in this production following great success at ENO is Chaz’men Williams-Ali as Robbins/Crab Man.

American stage director James Robinson is Artistic Director at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis where he has mounted numerous productions. This debut production has been praised for its staging and great attention to detail.
