EXAUDI has achieved international renown for an affinity with contemporary music at its most radical, experimental and complex. With their director James Weeks, the ensemble is regularly heard across Europe at high-profile venues and festivals including Aldeburgh Festival, LSO St Luke’s, Wigmore Hall, the Amsterdam Muziekgebouw, Witterner Tage für Neue Kammermusik, and IRCAM Manifeste in Paris. The UK premiere of Sciarrino’s Carnaval at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival is among recent projects, a trailer of which can be seen here. An integral part of EXAUDI’s success is a commitment to commissioning leading composers and also passionately supporting the emerging composers of the next generation.

A major ongoing project is the EXAUDI Italian Madrigal Book, which brings together the experimental of both the old and new through an exploration of Italian madrigals in both their renaissance and contemporary forms. Performances have seen the ensemble combine repertoire from composers such as Gesualdo and Monteverdi, with modern settings from the likes of Christopher Fox and Lorenzo Pagliei, including pieces written specially for the group. Director James Weeks recently received a British Composer Award for his piece ‘Libro di fiammelle e ombre’, which forms part of the Madrigal Book project.

EXAUDI’s latest disc of Finnissy’s vocal works on Winter & Winter, including his madrigal cycle ‘Gesualdo: Libro Sesto’, has received excellent reviews, including a feature as Editor’s Choice in Gramophone. A new disc of Gesualdo madrigals is currently being recorded for release later in 2019.
