Described as “a tenor to watch” and praised for his “ardour and Italianate resonance” (Opera Magazine), British tenor Simon Mascarenhas Carter is a member of the Opernstudio at the Wiener Staatsoper where roles this season include Tamino Geheimission Zauberflöte für Kinder, 1st Priest Die Zauberflöte, Un servo d’Amelia Un ballo in maschera, and Oberhexe/Billinger Jakob Die kleine Hexe.
He has a particularly strong connection to Glyndebourne where he created the role of Police Officer I in Mark-Anthony Turnage’s The Railway Children, performed Handel's Messiah and Echo in William Kentridge's production of L’Orfeo and covered Scaramuccio in Laurent Pelly's production of Ariadne auf Naxos.
Elsewhere, his roles include Don Ottavio Don Giovanni, Alfred Die Fledermaus, and Ferrando Così fan tutte. His concert repertoire includes Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Britten’s Saint Nicolas, Rossini’s Petite Messe solennelle, Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine, and Haydn’s The Creation. In recital, he collaborates regularly with guitarist Mark Dangerfield with recent performances of Walton and de Falla at the Royal Albert Hall.
A former lay clerk at King's College, Cambridge, Simon studied at the Royal College of Music as a Leverhulme Arts Scholar under the tutelage of Patricia Rozario OBE.
