Max Webster

Tony and Olivier Award-nominated director Max Webster works internationally across theatre and opera. Renowned for his imaginative visual storytelling and his ability to draw detailed, emotionally compelling performances from actors and singers, his work combines theatrical scale with a strong focus on character and narrative.

Opera has been part of Max’s work since the beginning of his career. Most recently he directed Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at The Grange Festival, praised by The Stage for its “carefully calibrated acting and moving tableaux”. In 2027 he makes his Glyndebourne Festival debut with a new production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola. Previous opera includes La bohème for Göteborg Opera and The Merry Widow for English National Opera, and he began his career working as a staff director at houses including the Royal Opera House, Teatro alla Scala, Opéra de Lyon, Dutch National Opera and English National Opera.

In theatre, Max’s acclaimed productions include Life of Pi in the West End and on Broadway, Macbeth with David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, Henry V with Kit Harington and The Importance of Being Earnest with Stephen Fry at the National Theatre and in the West End.
