Leonore Piano Trio "stylish" and "technically impeccable" in David Matthews Piano Trios recording

6 April 2017

Following on from the recent success of their January release of Taneyev & Rimsky-Korsakov Piano Trios for Hyperion (please see here), the Leonore Piano Trio’s disc of the Complete Piano Trios by English composer David Matthews has been receiving excellent praise from the critics this month.

The disc features as 'Editor's Choice' in the April 2017 edition of Gramophone, amongst the finest recordings from this month's reviews. David Matthews himself thinks of the Leonore Piano Trio’s performances as "definitive".

Released on Toccata Classics, the recording also features Matthews’ Journeying Songs for solo cello, "sensitively" played by Gemma Rosefield.

'The Leonore Piano Trio have clearly lived with this music; their playing is alert and stylish, unafraid to let me melodies sore. ‘Their performances seem to me definitive’, says Matthews.'
Richard Bratby, Gramophone

'Lyrical lines are played with a poignancy and delicacy by an ensemble who thoroughly believe in the music.'
Martin Cullingford, Gramophone

'David Matthews is doubly fortunate. […] on this disc, he has the wonderful, technically impeccable and sensitive Leonore Piano Trio as his performers.'
Gary Higginson, MusicWeb International
