Artist in Focus: David Parry

- This week's Artist in Focus is conductor David Parry who returns to Scottish Opera tomorrow night to conduct the UK-premiere of Jonathan Dove's Marx in London! Since his debut with the company in 2015 with Carmen – for which the Scotsman wrote 'The Orchestra plays like a dream under David Parry' – he has conducted La traviata, Hänsel und Gretel, Rossini's Scala de Seta, Wolf-Ferrari's Il secretto di Susanna and Mascagni's Zanetto. - David Parry is a close collaborator of composer Jonathan Dove. Tonight he conducts Marx in London! for the second time having conducted its world premiere at Theater Bonn. The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote 'The Beethoven-Orchester Bonn plays all this competently and transparently under the taut direction of David Parry.' This follows from other world premieres including 'Flight' at Glyndebourne, 'The Adventures of Pinnochio' at Opera North, 'Mansfield Park' at The Grange Festival and 'Tobias and The Angel' at the Almeida Theatre. - David Parry is equally at home on the concert platform and in recent seasons has appeared regularly with orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. His performance of Elgar 2 with the LPO “benefited from the detail and texture that Parry gave it.” (Bachtrack). Next month, he conducts the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic in a wide-ranging ‘Classic FM Hall of Fame' programme. - Acknowledged as an expert of Bel canto repertoire, David Parry has conducted the works of Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini at the Pesaro Festival, Stockholm Royal Opera, Theater Basel, The Grange Festival, Garsington and Opera North amongst others. He has made over 20 recordings for Opera Rara, and his recording of Rossini's Ermione – called 'a striking achievement' – won Gramophone Magazine's Opera of the Year award. - Alongside his work on the podium, David Parry is also a prolific translator and has translated over 20 operas including Anthony Minghella's production of Madam Butterfly at ENO, Offenbach's Vert-Vert at Garsington Opera, and several of the Opera in English recordings for Chandos.
