We are delighted to announce that trombonist Jörgen van Rijen has joined the Rayfield Allied roster for worldwide general management. He will be managed by Ben Rayfield.
Jörgen is currently the principal trombone player of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, but in recent years he has been making a major name for himself as a soloist of the highest quality and an important commissioner of major new works for the instrument.
Sir James Macmillan has written a concerto for Jörgen which was premiered in 2017 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Ivan Fischer. The performance was recorded and released on the RCO Live label. The piece has already gained a strong foothold in the repertoire with recent and future performances featuring Jörgen with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (with Gustavo Gimeno conducting), the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (Jonathan Nott), Antwerp Symphony (conducted by the composer), BBC Scottish Symphony and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony (both with Martyn Brabbins).
Future commissions include concertos by Tan Dun (Royal Concertgebouw, Luxemburg Philharmonie, Hong Kong Philharmonic), Francisco Coll (a double concerto for trombone and violin, with Patricia Kopatchinskaja), Andrew Norman and Bryce Dessner.
In the studio, Jörgen’s recording of Harald Genzmer’s Concerto with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin was recently released on the Capriccio label. Jörgen has recently recorded 4 pieces by Arvo Pärt which he has arranged for trombone and chamber orchestra together with the composer himself, which will be released on the BIS label in October. Further ahead, other projects include a tour and recording of Stravinsky’s Soldiers Tale with Isabelle Faust, several recital tours in Japan, and 3 new CDs for BIS including the MacMillan concerto and the Trombone Concerto written for Jörgen in 2012 by Kalevi Aho.
