'Dr Feelgood wins the day': Glowing Reviews for Richard Burkhard at Garsington Opera

7 July 2025

Richard Burkhard has received glowing reviews for his performances this summer at Garsington Opera as Dr Dulcamara in L'elisir D'amore and Don Fernando in Fidelio.

Critics have written:

"In the vocal cast, experience trumped youth in the shape of Richard Burkhard, who ran the show as the quack Dulcamara, with a spring in his step and a twinkle in his eye. His Italian patter was exceptional, with a pleasantly rich tone and every word clearly intelligible"

"Burkhard’s disarming geniality won me over. Never was the appellation “Dr Feelgood” better deserved."

David Karlin, Bachtrack

"while Richard Burkhard (the showman/quack Dulcamara) was fulsomely characterful in both vocal and dramatic dimensions"

Andrew Green, Gramophone Magazine

"Garsington favourite Richard Burkhard is Dulcamara, rocking up in a red sports car with a peroxide blonde assistant. He displayed all the patter and quick wit the quack requires, but his Dulcamara is not just a swindler on the make; he’s observant, worldly and wise."

Mark Pullinger, The Times

"Burkhard’s rogueish Dulcamara was quick-witted and endearing. A fine baritone voice, he effortlessly worked through the faster numbers with a light and stylish articulation."

Fiona Maclean, London Unattached

"Richard Burkhard has delighted regulars here in so many roles, and his Dulcamara was sung with typical flair and elegance, every phrase in his arias clearly delineated."

Melanie Eskenazi, MusicOMH

"Richard Burkhard’s snake-oil salesman Dulcamara tears through his comic patter numbers with aplomb"

George Hall, The Stage

Baritone Richard Burkhard’s Don Fernando is both pious and authoritative, embodying the righteous power of the state but also very human in his response to seeing his friend Florestan imprisoned and in chains.

Performances of L'elisir d'amore continue until 21 July and Fidelio until 22 July.
