Phillip Rhodes recently returned to one of his signature roles - Giorgio Germont - in La Traviata with the Auckland Philharmonia under their music director Giordano Bellincampi, and his performance has been highly praised by critics:
“Phillip Rhodes’ outstanding portrayal of Giorgio displayed the same range, effortlessly moving from intense fury to remorseful nobility.”
William Dart, NZ Herald
“Phillip Rhodes was impressive as Giorgio Germont, Alfredo’s father. He provided a strong emotional character with his furious and exciting singing, which was genuinely powerful and unsettling. He brilliantly conveyed, with gesture demeanour and voice a man using his superior moral station to impose his will.”
John Daly-Peoples, New Zealand Arts Review
“Rhodes as Giorgio brought his usual wonderful baritone and commanding presence to the production.”
Andrew Whiteside (NZ journalist)
