19 April 2017

Mahan Esfahani’s recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations on Deutsche Grammophon has won the 2017 BBC Music Magazine Award for Best Instrumental Recording.

Writing at the time of the disc's release BBC Music Magazine commented "Mahan Esfahani’s recording of this perennial favourite is unmissable", with the main review going on to say "Even music-lovers who normally hate the sound of the harpsichord find themselves mesmerised by Mahan Esfahani. He seems to have a magic touch on the instrument, coaxing out an extraordinary range of colour and articulations. Never has that been more evident than on this recording, where the playing matches the brilliant playfulness of Bach’s variations.".

Elsewhere the recording has been described as “brilliant”, “one of the best” and "A hugely stimulating account of one of the peaks of western music.”
